Desmond Singleton
The projects and pieces were born out of the artist's idea to bring sustainable garden art to gardens. It started organically as a passion project to give to relatives and friends. The pieces created were emblematic of passions or hobbies enjoyed by the people Desmond Singleton began creating the art for. Its inception was with helping family members/friends through difficult periods by providing them with pieces highlighting the salient aspects of their lives while enriching their surroundings, with long lasting and sustainable installations.
The reason for using galvanized steel was the familiarity of the artist with it and its long-lasting capabilities. Singleton worked within galvanising for the last 20 years and understands the benefits that the process provides. "It’s a very sustainable practice" Singleton mentions, which bodes well for the longevity he wishes to provide with his art pieces.
Therefore, what started off as finding a piece of scrap metal with the Dublin GAA Crest's silhouette slowly developed into art pieces and functional garden units, like sleepers.
