Galvanized Arch

During the lockdown, Maria Scott, a Colombian resident living in Hammersmith, embarked on an inspiring community project. She took charge of several sections of wasteland, transforming them into vibrant spaces filled with flowers and plants, creating a welcoming area for her community to gather and enjoy the open air.
Recognizing the value of Maria's initiative, a workshop owner based in a rural area with ample green space decided to contribute. Moved by Maria's dedication, he sent a galvanized arch and other materials from his studio. He personally traveled to London to assist in the installation, witnessing firsthand the community's enthusiastic involvement. People from diverse backgrounds and faiths, many without even a balcony to call their own, came together in this communal space.
Understanding the importance of preserving the project, the team approached the Hammersmith and Fulham Council to secure permission for a protective fence. The design, infused with whimsical elements like butterflies and marbles, reflected the artistic style of the contributors. The children in the community were given the task of painting the butterflies, adding a personal touch to the space.
Following the installation, the workshop owner and his wife returned to Hammersmith, where they joined local residents in affixing marbles to the fence, making everyone a part of the project's finishing touches. The impact on the community was profound, with residents deeply touched by the collaborative effort.
The project was executed in partnership with the Hammersmith and Fulham Council and installed by ID Verde contractors. The use of galvanized steel was a deliberate choice, ensuring durability and a patinated finish. A mordant solution was applied, giving the metal a precious, aged appearance.
This project stands as a testament to the power of community and the beauty of collective effort, transforming a simple plot of land into a cherished communal haven.
